Cold
porcelain is a man-made air-drying paste, no heat is
required in the drying process, hence "cold" porcelain. The
paste can be used to create any shape or form, your
imagination is the only limitation.
For flowers the paste can be rolled out, each petal is cut
into the desired shape using a cutter and thinned or frilled
to give them shape and movement before assembling on the
centre, PVA glue is used to adhere one piece of paste to
another.
When modelling figurines or animals a wire frame or
Styrofoam should be used for the centre, then small amounts
of cold porcelain paste added at a time, this ensures there
will be no or very little cracking of the paste when dried,
as cold porcelain shrinks by approximately 15% to 18%.
Porcelain should always be wrapped tightly in a plastic bag
and stored in an airtight box at room temperature, never in
a refrigerator.
Cold porcelain can be used straight from the packet and
painted once dry, this way you will have a translucent
effect to your finished work if oil paints are used to
colour. By adding a small amount of white paint to the paste
before you being will prevent the porcelain paste from
drying translucent. It is possible to add other colours to
the paste before use, but only a small amount of paint
should be added at any one time as the colour will be 2 to 3
shades darker when dry. Any paint can be used water colour,
acrylic or oil, this is my preferred painting medium.
Always keep your colours wrapped separately to prevent
colour bleeding and store.
